If you are a bit unclear in regards to What Is Meditation, please visit that page in my blog, and I will give you several definitions of what meditation is, at least for me. Please keep this in mind though: The definition is not nearly as important as the practice. I'll get to this, below.
So, once you have a vague idea of what meditation IS, what does it mean to do it correctly? What is the definition of 'correct,' anyway? "Free from error. To put right. In accordance with fact or truth." I'm sure you get the picture, yet these may not be your definitions. How about this:
Performing meditation correctly means that you are achieving the goals you set for each meditation session. Or, following the guidelines you, or someone else, have set for you in regards to performing meditation. Or, how about this one for how to do meditation correctly: You feel better after your meditation session than you did prior to it. Sounds good to me!
Do those fit your definition? Maybe. But, can you see how complicated this gets when attempting to define 'correct,' or 'correctly?' What's correct to you may be different than what's correct for me! Even if we see 'eye-to-eye' on 99% of what's defined as 'how to do meditation correctly,' we may still be 'off' that 1%. And it may be a very important 1% we don't agree with. But that's okay! Let me explain, below.
Words such as 'correct,' 'improvement,' 'right,' are all very loaded words. What does that mean, loaded? For me, it means they are all very subjective to each person, or individual. What is correct, improved or right, may mean something totally different to you than it does me. Or, get this one: The definitions of each of these may change for me, or you, on an hourly or daily basis! Our attitude changes, how we see the world changes, our point of view changes based on new information, and then how we 'define' things change. (It may be all intellectual within our own brain and thinking process, or, something external may change. Thus, our definition may change as well.)
If you don't understand this, ponder upon this concept above for a good five minutes, and I'm sure it will come to you. Please note that just because you can't, or don't want to grasp, word definitions or concepts, doesn't mean you are ignorant, stupid, or un-educated. It just means you aren't grasping it at this moment. It happens to me all the time! So, don't fret if you don't 'get' all this philosophical mumbo-jumbo, above. Its just me attempting to explain with words, which can be very difficult!
So, back to the gist of this post, 'how to do meditation correctly?' For me, correct meditation is first, actually performing meditation, then performing what I set out to accomplish while being impeccable. (Doing my best.) I may not accomplish what I set out to accomplish, but at least I tried and did my best, and that is 'correct' enough for me!
If you have any experience at all performing meditation, you will soon realize how difficult it is. It's a simple process, yet not easy. So, you do the best you can, based on the guidelines you have set for yourself, or your teacher/coach/mentor has set for you.
Thus, for me, how to do meditation correctly mean to do your best, each and every moment, while meditating for the allotted time. If, and that's a big if, you have specific instructions or rules you need to follow while performing meditation, then add that into the equation of 'correct meditation.' What I don't want you to do is get obsessed with results from your meditation sessions. Continued below.
Obtaining or getting 'results' is yet another loaded word or phrase, similar to those, above. If you have five goals for your daily meditation session and you only achieved one of them, did you get the 'results' you wanted? Or, did you perform your meditation correctly? See how confusing this can get? So, just do your best. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back. When your breathing changes from some psychological or physiological sense, gently bring it back. Or, just sit and chill and observe!
Now that I sit back and think about this, the only way in which one is NOT performing meditation correctly is to not try. If you don't want to meditate, don't. I think it's important, and there will be times when you don't want to, but really need to, yet hey, it's your life. Just sit down, shut up, and relax. That's all I'm really asking here! :-)
So, for now, my final word on this whole 'correct' definition is this: Do your meditation and do the best you can at it. If your mind wanders off 500 times in 20 minutes, that's fine. Just do your best to bring it back 500 times. If your mind wanders off 19 of the 20 minutes, congrats to you on bringing it back for just that one minute! The point is, you actually performed meditation, did what you could, and you did your best. Who can ask for more? Practice makes perfect.
Okay, I think that is enough for now on the topic of how to do meditation correctly. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to call me at my number below, e-mail me, or just leave your comments in the comment section at the bottom of this page.
Thanks for your time, and until next time, keep meditating!
